In most cases individuals are familiar with the IRS and the necessity of filing yearly taxes. It is important that you understand that if you do not pay your taxes for several years or you fail to pay enough taxes you may end up owing a substantial amount to the IRS. In many cases individuals are unable to pay the large amount the IRS demands. The IRS has come up with a special program known as the Offer in Compromise that is designed to help people settle their IRS debt.

The Offer in Compromise Program is designed to help consumers settle their debt with the IRS for less than what they actually owe. Basically the tax payer will appeal to the IRS for leniency on their tax debts. Ultimately the IRS will decide whether or not you can have a break. In most cases the taxpayer has to prove that they are financially unable to pay off their debt or they are not legally responsible for the tax debt reported.

The IRS is authorized to offer plans that benefit financially burdened taxpayers. Oftentimes the offer that you get is less than the amount that you actually owe but the final amount is calculated using a method designed by the IRS> There are 3 main offers available under the Offer in Compromise Program. The first offer is called Doubt as to Liability.

The Doubt as to Liability offer is simple because the taxpayer must be able to prove that the tax debt is incorrect. Basically you feel that you do not actually owe the money.

It is your responsibility to prove that you do not owe the money using documentation or other evidence. Those individuals who have found themselves a victim of mistaken identity or Identity Theft are generally offered the Doubt as to Liability plan.

Doubt as to Collectability is the second type of offer and the most common. Basically the IRS has come to the conclusion that no matter how much time they get the individual will not be able to pay the full amount due.

In other wards no matter the circumstances or the individual's future financial situation the IRS concludes that they will not be able to pay the entire amount. The IRS will generally try to come up with a reasonable settlement amount by going over your disposable income as well as your assets. Effective Tax Administration is the final and least offered plan by the IRS.

Some people may be able to afford to pay their tax debt but making them do so might seem unfair.
